Esther showed us how to draw onto the inside of a Tetrapak carton using a pointy etching tool. Special ink is wiped across the surface of the drawing and then removed with various screwed up bits of cloth so that only the etched areas retain the ink. When fed through a printing press (basically a mangle), the inked areas are printed. After the Great North Road (A1) was re-routed, Felton became the quiet village it is today, and the Stag’s Head became a pub. Eventually the pub closed and the building fell into disrepair. Really this map should be tall and thin but it needed to fit the existing large wooden frames which are nearly square, so I had to use some artistic license. Navigating the relationship between accuracy and communicating the information necessary is one of my favourite challenges (no, really it is!). This is on the larger piece of watercolour paper which will become the finished original. I use a soft 2B pencil and try not to press too hard, as there is just as much rubbing out at this stage. You might be able to see the faint lines I used as a grid, to help me copy the smaller sketch onto the larger paper. I decided to do away with the current long list down the side and the complicated key, so all of the features needed to be labelled in a way that looks good but doesn’t obscure anything important. I love the smooth, even lines you get with fineliner pens, and prefer to use “hot press” watercolour paper, which has the smoothest surface. Once the ink is on, I can rub out all of the pencil lines and send another photo to the client for any final tweaks. I knew I wanted it to be eye-catching, so I employed my full arsenal of colours. Knowing that your work will be publicly displayed is nerve-wracking as it’s difficult to predict how something will look after it’s been printed. For my own prints I can have proofs done and make adjustments, but when you hand your work over to a large organization they have control. Anyway, I was very happy when I saw it. Phew! First I painted the compass, which points to the only 4 destinations which were possible, and then I went to town on all of the place names. I didn’t realise how much I would enjoy playing around with the language and tropes of fantasy mapmaking! The idea of the Covid Kraken came to me right at the end. The words in the waves tell the story of so many contradictory hopes and frustrations. Can you guess the meaning of Rugby 8, Cemetery Circuit and Hepscott Square? I’m sure you had your own versions… I hope the map explains itself, and that it tells you a little bit about my thoughts, but in a way which is light-hearted. Other artists can capture the grim realities (and it was so grim), but I wanted my painting to reflect how I try to approach life and the trials that inevitably come along. I tried to create a sense of space by using warm, gold green for the foreground, my go-to green (Hookers) in the middle and cooler purples and blues in the distance. It took a few attempts to get the Kittiwakes looking properly like Kittiwakes and not any other type of gull. There is a lot of rubbing out and starting again, until I come up with something I’m happy with. After it’s been approved, I draw a simple grid (you can see the lines here) which helps me make a much more detailed pencil drawing on my watercolour paper. One photo showed her asleep with her tail dangling over the edge of the sofa, so I decided to transfer her to the top of the Christmas market insert. It’s fun to play around with scale and placement when making a map.
