A Map of Scandinavia

Project Background

This map was commissioned by Andy C on behalf of an education training company called Challenging Learning. It was to celebrate the links between the company offices in the UK and those in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The map was to go in their brochure, on their website and also to hang on the wall of the company’s founder.

Andy provided me with a comprehensive list of illustrations, some geographical guidance, and then left me to it.

This project was a lot of fun - who doesn’t want to paint a Viking longboat, a sea monster, and Santa riding through the Northern Lights! I also particularly enjoyed painting Abba, the ice hockey players, the Sami people and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Oh yes, and the oil rig, the bison and the tall ships!

Here’s the finished map…

As well as the pleasure I found in drawing the illustrations, I learned something about the Nordic countries. I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t heard of the Sami people before, and I didn’t know that bison can be found in Norway. It was also very satisfying working with such a successful company who seem to be going from strength to strength.
